Students Place in 3 Hair Competitions at ISSE
Cosmetology students from Oceanside College of Beauty placed in each one of the three student hair competitions at the International Salon & Spa Expo on Sunday, January 29, the biggest beauty event on the West Coast which over 40,000 beauty professionals from around the world attended.
Melanie Naylor placed third in the Fantasy Inspired by Nature competition, Rebecca Lureen placed third in the Bridal Competition, and Ksenia Reznikova placed fourth in the Cut, Color, and Style competition. For placing, the three women were awarded a medal and a one-year membership to the Professional Beauty Association. More importantly, the women said the experience helped them gain confidence and grow professionally.

Ksenia was the first student of the day to compete in the Cut, Color, and Style competition. Her look was inspired by a painting of black and white striped feathers. Before the event, Ksenia colored her mannequin’s blonde hair with straight black, horizontal lines. For the competition, she had 40 minutes to finish the look by cutting and styling before presenting it to the panel of judges. Ksenia gave her doll head “the fastest cut of her life,” which was a straight cut, with feathery texture in the back.

Next up was Rebecca, who competed in the Bridal Competition. Rebecca had 30 minutes to style her medium length up-do on her mannequin head, a three-dimensional rose inspired look, and showcase it to the judges. This was Rebecca’s first competition and she was admittedly very nervous. She was reluctant to compete in the ISSE Bridal competition at first, but was persuaded to do so by the other girls.
“Ksenia and Melanie are my mentors. They really helped me push myself. When I was competing, I found myself opening up and gaining confidence. It was a great learning experience for me,” Rebecca said.
“It’s like Rebecca is a whole new person. There’s a whole new air of confidence about her. It was awesome to watch her transformation,” Melanie said.

Rounding out the day’s events, Melanie participated in the Fantasy Inspired by Nature competition. Her look was inspired by Japanese maples leaves. She colored her doll’s hair red and orange to mimic the fall leaves before the competition. The cut could also have been done before the event, but Melanie chose to do her cutting live on stage (the only participant to do so) so she could precisely cut the leaves in the hair. She had one hour to complete the style before presenting to the judges.
Several students and instructors came out to show their support and cheer on their classmates during their competitions. Mr. Donald Cerciello, a cosmetology instructor at Oceanside College of Beauty, coached the women through each of their competitions and gave them valuable feedback after each performance.
“He told us to go up there and have fun. You’re doing what you love and that’s all that matters,” Ksenia said. “It was so nice to see so many people sharing in our passion.”
This was the first year that hair competitions were part of the International Salon & Spa Expo, the biggest beauty event on the West Coast which over 40,000 beauty professionals from around the world attended.
Students Get Creative With Zodiac Symbols

Cosmetology students got to use their imagination on Creative Day in January. For the assignment, students had to recreate the symbols of the horoscope (either the Zodiac or the Chinese horoscope) using hair and makeup. Some of the most popular looks were Leo the Lion and Aquarius the Water Carrier.
